Man in critical condition after Long Grove crash

A 21-year-old Crystal Lake man is in critical condition after slamming the car he was driving into the rear of a semitrailer on Lake-Cook Road early Friday, authorities said.

Lake County Sheriff's Det. Christopher Covelli said the truck was stopped at a red light in the westbound lane of Lake-Cook and Hicks roads in Long Grove at 1:25 a.m. when the trailer was hit by a 2013 Volkswagen Golf.

The 33-year-old truck driver from Fargo, North Dakota, had just started to drive through the intersection after the light changed to green when the truck was hit from behind. The truck driver found the Volkswagen wedged under the trailer, Covelli said.

The unidentified driver of the Volkswagen was extracted from the vehicle and taken to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, where he remains in critical condition.

Covelli said no citations have been issued. The crash is under investigation by Lake County Sheriff Technical Crash Investigation Unit.

Investigators will work to determine if drugs, alcohol, distraction, speed, or other elements played a factor in the crash, he said.
