Musical Coast

This weekend packs a high-energy punch when the North Coast Music Festival brings some of the hottest pop, indie and electronic artists to Chicago's Union Park. Headliners include Odesza and indie radio darlings Grouplove on Friday, Bassnectar and Logic on Saturday, and the award-winning house producer Zedd and area prog-rock stalwarts Umphrey's McGee Sunday. Also, clear your schedule for the infinitely adorable Matt and Kim when they play their fun, pop-flavored hip-hop Sunday night. And be sure to save some local love for sets by Chicago's own funky soul rockers Nasty Snacks on Friday, Bucky Fargo and The Trap House Saturday and CZBoogie Sunday afternoon. Starts at 3 p.m. Friday, Sept. 2, and 1 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 3-4, at Union Park, 1501 W. Randolph St., Chicago. Daughtry at Festival Park

Fifth-season “American Idol” finalist Chris Daughtry made music before his big TV break, and he's certainly stayed on it since. Not long after his cut from the show, the Southern rocker formed the Billboard and American Music Award-winning Daughtry, which has rolled out four albums (with a fifth on the way) and played on high-profile tours with Puddle of Mudd, 3 Doors Down and the Goo Goo Dolls, among others. Catch the band at an outdoor show as part of the Grand Victoria Casino summer concert series, supported by Hinder and Dishwalla. 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 3, at Festival Park, 132 S. Grove Ave., Elgin. $30-$85. (847) 931-6100 or grandvictoriacasino.com.

Robert Pollard and his indie rock band Guided by Voices plays Chicago's Metro Saturday, Sept. 3.

Guided by Pollard

After a brief two-year retirement, Ohio's musically prolific, lo-fi Guided by Voices is back on the scene, led by longtime indie rocker Robert Pollard. In addition to working on a new album, GBV is again playing live shows, including Saturday's visit to Chicago's Metro. Indie rock band Broncho and Evanston's Split Single join what should be a rowdy party. 8:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 3, at Metro, 3730 N. Clark St., Chicago. $36. (773) 549-4140 or metrochicago.com.

Black Sabbath plays Tinley Park's Hollywood Casino Amphitheatre Sunday, Sept. 4.

'End' of an era?

Metal icon Ozzy Osbourne promises the yearlong “The End” tour is really the end for Black Sabbath, and as the band nears nearly five decades of unforgettable music and spectacle, it might very well be true. Either way, catch the legendary rock gods when they visit the Chicago area with California rock band Rival Sons. 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 4, at Hollywood Casino Amphitheatre, 19100 Ridgeland Ave., Tinley Park. $20-$166; VIP and meet-and-greet packages are also available.
