College of DuPage Cross-Country Opens Season Aug. 27

Members of the College of DuPage men's and women's cross-country team are busy in the classroom and on the pavement this week as they welcome the start of the fall 2016 semester and their first meet of the season.

The Chaparrals open their season at the Harper Invite at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 27, at Harper College in Palatine.

"We've got a young group this year with only two returning runners for each team," said Head Coach Daniel Woldesilassie. "They're looking good so far and I'm excited to see how the group performs as we get the season started."

This is Woldesilassie's first year at the helm. He previously served as assistant coach under Matt Wilhite who is focusing his efforts on COD's Track and Field teams.

COD's squad has five meets on its schedule this season before the regional championships in late October. The team will host the College of DuPage Invitational at 4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 23, at St. James Farm in Warrenville.

As the season gets under way, the team will host a fundraiser to defer travel costs. Their Run-a-thon is scheduled for 10 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 3, at the track in Bjarne Ullsvik Stadium on COD's Glen Ellyn campus, 425 Fawell Blvd.

"The members will run 10 miles, or 40 laps, and the team gets sponsors to pledge an amount per lap or a flat donation," Woldesilassie said. "This helps us to offset costs and the athletes enjoy themselves in the process."

For more information on the Run-a-thon, call Woldesilassie at (630) 800-8552. Click here for more information on COD Athletics.
