Memorable quotes, calls by legendary Vin Scully

Vin Scully has been the voice of the Dodgers since 1950, but he also has been a national-network top voice on baseball, football and golf.

Here are a couple of his other famous calls plus some quotes attributed to Scully.

Bill Buckner's error in Game 6 of the 1986 World Series:

"So the winning run is at second base with two out. Three and two to Mookie Wilson. Little roller up along first. Behind the bag! It gets through Buckner. Here comes Knight and the Mets win it!"

Kirk Gibson's game-winning homer in Game 1 of the 1988 World Series:

"The tying run is at second with two out. Now the Dodgers don't need the muscle of Gibson as much as a basehit. And on deck is the leadoff man, Steve Sax. Three and two. Sax waiting on deck. But the game right now is at the plate.

"High flyball into right field. She is … gone!"

After Scully's trademark silence, he punctuated it with: "In a year that has been so improbable, the impossible has happened."

Other Scully staples:

"It's time for Dodger baseball! Hi, everybody, and a very pleasant good afternoon to you, wherever you may be … Pull up a chair and spend part of your Sunday with us."

"Andre Dawson has a bruised knee and is listed as day to day. Aren't we all?"

"Statistics are used much like a drunk uses a lamp post: for support, not illumination."
