That kind of day for Bears

Third-team quarterback Connor Shaw played better than any of his Bears teammates in Saturday's 23-7 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, and he wound up being carted off the field with a broken leg that could end his season.

It was that kind of day for the Bears.

When coach John Fox spoke to the media after the game, he characterized Shaw's injury as "very serious" and said the second-year quarterback was on his way to the hospital.

Shaw didn't enter the game until 7:13 remained, relieving Brian Hoyer mid-drive with the Bears trailing 23-0 and the ball at their 48-yard line. Shaw immediately scrambled for 13 yards and then completed 3 straight passes to Cam Meredith for 11, 22 and 16 yards, the last one for a TD.

"It's going to be a dark time (for him)," Hoyer said of the injury. "That's just the way it is. That's part of football, and unfortunately it happened to a great kid."

Shaw completed 5 of 6 passes for 68 yards and his scramble was the Bears' longest run of the game. He played only 8 snaps but accounted for 81 yards after the Bears generated just 94 yards through the first three quarters.

"Every game he comes ready to ball," said Meredith, who had 4 receptions for a team-high 64 yards. "I'm praying that he'll be back with a speedy recovery. He's definitely been a hard worker, and it speaks volumes out there on the field, so I'm glad we were able to connect. I just wish the best for him."

Declining numbers:

Starting cornerback Tracy Porter suffered a concussion and did not return after he was hit in the head during a collision with teammate Harold Jones-Quartey.

The Bears were already without Kyle Fuller (knee), the other cornerback starter, and starting nickel corner Bryce Callahan (hamstring), so Porter's injury leaves them without their top three corners.

"He's one of the leaders back there, so we need him," linebacker Danny Trevathan said. "We're going to need him and what he brings to the table; leadership, attitude, everything he's got."

Roller-coaster rookie:

Rookie cornerback Deiondre Hall had an up-and-down day.

The fourth-round pick from Northern Iowa accounted for the Bears' only turnover when he intercepted an Aaron Murray pass that tipped off the hands of intended receiver Demarcus Robinson. The takeaway at the Bears' 11-yard line late in the third quarter, saved a potential score.

Hall's pick made up for his misplay on the previous series when he was victimized for a 58-yard pass lay from Nick Foles to Tyreek Hill that set up a Chiefs touchdown.

Hall learned a valuable lesson.

"Stay deep," he said. "If that's what the call is, keep the call and stay deep, but especially going against a fast receiver like that."
