Boys soccer: Warren's a winner at Grayslake North

Kevin Penarrieta, Hugo Flores, Ruben Delgadillo and Curtis Bae scored for Warren's boys soccer team, and the Blue Devils wrapped up Grayslake North's invite by beating the host Knights 4-1 on Saturday.

Warren (3-0-1) led 2-1 at halftime. Blue Devils keeper Jeffrey Pioquinto made 3 saves.

Grayslake North (0-3) opened the scoring, as senior Miguel Carrera played a ball to junior Nick Kloczkowski, who took a touch before burying his shot into the far corner of the net.

"During the first twenty minutes of play, we really did a nice job of coming out and putting (Warren) under some good pressure," Grayslake North coach Adam DeCaluwe said. "Unfortunately, as the half continued, Warren started to create some more time and space when in possession of the ball, and they started to apply more pressure to us."

Penarrieta converted a penalty kick to tie the score, before Flores scored to give Warren the lead.

"The second half was more of the same," DeCaluwe said. "While we had moments of quality, we struggled to get back into (the game) and Warren continued to convert their chances."

Vernon Hills 1, Wauconda 0: The host Cougars (4-2) ended their own tournament with their fourth shutout of the season.

Stephen Auw had the game-winner from Jake Schulmann. Brennan Reback recorded his fourth shutout with 4 saves.

Niles North won the tournament, beating Johnsburg 3-0 in its finale.

Grayslake Central 3, Sycamore 1: In Vernon Hills' Cougar Classic, the Rams got second-half goals from Randy Betancourth, Trevor Veenstra and Leo Orozco. Ethan Mendoza and Austin Rockel had assists.

Senior goalkeeper David Young and senior center back Matt Kosikowski were named to the all-tournament team for Grayslake Central (4-1).

Libertyville 3, Niles West 1: Playing for the first time since winning the Class 3A state championship last fall, the Wildcats picked up where they left off.

So did junior Ryan Wittenbrink, who scored a hat trick in the North Shore College Showcase at New Trier.

"We played well, but we have a lot to work on," said Wittenbrink, who scored 10 goals last season. "We graduated a lot of players, but I think we've got a good young group that can fill the spots. The schedule will help us a lot."

Wittenbrink scored twice in the first six minutes of the game. He scored the first in the third minute off a pass from Evan Rasmussen. Three minutes later, Wittenbrink struck again off a pass from Grant Herbek.

Niles West (1-2, 0-1) got its goal on a Danijel Radeljic free kick that made the score 2-1 in the 34th minute.

But Wittenbrink closed the door with a free kick of his own from 25 yards out. The ball hit the right post and went into the goal in the 79th minute.

"We had a really good result for the first game of the year," said Libertyville coach Al Beard, who filled in for Andy Bitta, who was out with an illness. "It will take a little while to get used to a different formation and different personal. We've got a lot going on."

In the other games, Glenbrook North got past Lyons 3-0, St. Charles shut out Waukegan 2-0 and host New Trier blanked Buffalo Grove 2-0.
