Stenson withdraws with pain in his knee

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. (AP) - British Open champion Henrik Stenson has withdrawn from The Barclays with pain his right knee.

Stenson, who won the silver medal at the Olympics two weeks ago, opened with a 74 at Bethpage Black and felt enough discomfort in his knee that he thought it best to withdraw. Still to come for the 40-year-old Swede are three additional FedEx Cup playoff events and the Ryder Cup over the next five weeks.

Stenson had surgery on the same knee during the offseason.

He started the playoffs at No. 14 and likely will fall out of the top 20. The top 30 advance to the finale at the Tour Championship.
