Bring Your Kid to Work Day features financial education, volunteerism

As Christian McQuade of Elmhurst heads head back to school he does so with a little more knowledge of what his father, Corey McQuade, does when he goes to work at Northwestern Mutual-Chicago. More importantly, he picked up a few personal money management skills and was inspired to make a difference in the lives of others. It was all part of the financial planning firm's annual Bring Your Child to Work Day.

"It's great to bring children and parents together to share our workplace, the work we do and the causes we are passionate about," said Corey D. McQuade, managing partner. More than 30 children participated in hands-on activities designed to teach them about the financial planning profession and the importance of serving others.

"Whether they follow in their parent's career footsteps remains to be seen, but it's never too young to start teaching children how to manage money and create financial freedom," said David Deegan, a wealth management advisor who led the group's financial literacy lesson. "Most kids know how to spend their money, but more important is how to save, invest and donate."

Beyond becoming more financially savvy, the kids also had a chance to learn about the firm's philanthropic outreach to support children and families fighting childhood cancer and other illnesses. The boys and girls created inspiring greeting cards for hospitalized kids. They hosted a lemonade stand and helped raise close to $1800 for Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation for Childhood Cancer Research. And, they received a special Ronald McDonald paper house to help them collect pop tabs from aluminum cans that are recycled and raise money for the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Chicagoland and Northwestern Indiana.
