Wisconsin lineman Dan Voltz of Barrington retires due to injuries

Former Daily Herald all-area football lineman Dan Voltz, who started in 27 games for the Wisconsin Badgers over his college career, has decided to retire from football.

Voltz, a native of Barrington and a three-sport athlete at Barrington High School, missed six games last season after injuring a knee in a game against Illinois. A three-year starter at center, Voltz had been rehabbing his knee while preparing to shift to guard this season for the Badgers.

"It's been a hard decision to make," Voltz said following Tuesday's practice at Camp Randall Stadium. "Something I've dealt with pretty much my whole career is injuries. For physical reasons, (that's) the main reason that it kind of forced me to start thinking about this."

Wisconsin coach Paul Crist said Voltz will continue to help the team, possibly working with the offensive line and assisting in workouts in the weight room.

Voltz is a three-time Academic All-Big Ten performer and Big Ten Distinguished Scholar. He graduated with his bachelor's degree in kinesiology last December and is pursuing a master's degree in kinesiology.

As a second-team All-Big Ten center as a sophomore, Voltz started all 14 games for a Badgers team that set a school-record of 320.1 rushing yards per game with Heisman Trophy runner-up Melvin Gordon.

""I'm going to remain a big part of the program," Voltz said. "My role is just going to shift from playing to helping out in other ways."
