Boys soccer: Matonik's hat trick elevates Antioch

Cody Matonik notched 3 goals, and Antioch's boys soccer team held on to beat Marengo 4-1 in a nonconference match on Tuesday.

Antioch (1-1), which led 4-1 at halftime, also got a goal and 2 assists from Zach Espitia. Gabe Tijerina had a goal as well. R.J. Vazquez and Adam Lynn each contributed an assist.

Matonik got his hat trick when he took on several Marengo players, including the keeper, and dribbled the ball into the goal.

Warren 7, Crystal Lake South 0: At Grayslake North, Richie Flores scored a hat trick, Ruben Delgadillo added a pair of goals, and the Blue Devils earned their first win of the season.

Hugo Flores and Thomas Macheras also scored for Warren (1-0-1), while Jeff Pioquinto and Hunter Faurbo shared the shutout in net.

Carmel 3, Lakes 2: At Lake Forest, the Corsairs prevailed, winning 4-3 in penalty kicks to advance on first-day action of the Lake Forest Shootout.

Cam Beezely scored both goals for Lakes. He headed in a cross from Nick Dydo and then tallied again in the last minute of the first half off an assist from Andrew Gateano. Eagles keepers Wade Parmly and Danny Weiczorek each had 6 saves.

Carmel will next play Lake Forest at 4:30 p.m. Thursday in the semifinals. Lakes will take on Highland Park at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.

Vernon Hills 1, Elk Grove 0: The Cougars moved to 3-0 for the year, as Chris White scored his sixth goal of the season with an assist from Cole Guillaume.

Brennan Reback recorded the shutout in net with 5 saves.

Carmel 2, Lake Zurich 0: On Monday, the Corsairs received first-half goals from Rob Rao (assisted by Luke Johnson) and Austin Ehren.

Kyle Knauer made 3 saves in earning the shutout for Carmel in their season opener.

"(We) dominated the first half," Corsairs coach Ray Krawzak said. "(We had) many more high-quality attempts than we were able to finish."
