Boomers fall to Lake Erie 9-8

Every starter recorded a hit for the Schaumburg Boomers Tuesday night but they were unable to keep the Lake Erie bats in check as the Boomers dropped the opener 9-8.

The Boomers jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first on a Kenny Towns sacrifice fly. Lake Erie responded with a 4-run second. Schaumburg scored one in the bottom of the frame to make it 4-2. The Crushers scored two in the fourth and one in the fifth to extend their lead to 7-2.

The Boomers weren't done though. Tobias Moreno scored on a fielding error by Lake Erie before Mike McClellan drew a bases loaded walk to pull Schaumburg within three. Mikal Hill plated a run on a fielder's choice to the second baseman. James Keller got in on the action with a sharp single to left and Jordan Dean made it 7-7 with a two-out single to right. The Boomers' bullpen failed to hold the lead in the sixth, allowing 2 runs. Hill made it a 9-8 game with a bases-loaded walk in the eighth, but Schaumburg was unable to complete the comeback in the ninth.

Kagen Hopkins threw 5 innings allowing 7 runs and striking out three. Towns extended his on-base streak to 17 games with a single in the 5-run fifth.

The Boomers send lefty Gunnar Kines (4-4, 3.14) to the mound Wednesday to square off against (Juan Caballero, 2-1, 3.79).
