Families set to reunite with caregivers at Good Samaritan Hospital's NICU Reunion Aug. 28

Former patients of Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital's neonatal intensive care unit will reunite with their caregivers during the 23rd annual NICU reunion on Sunday, Aug. 28, at the hospital, 3815 Highland Ave., Downers Grove.

While some of these babies come to the NICU weighing less than pound, Dr. Vibha Thaker, a neonatologist on staff at Good Samaritan Hospital, says the reunion provides a great opportunity for staff to reconnect with their former patients and families.

"It's remarkable to see how these once fragile babies have grown into big toddlers and children," said Thaker.

Each year, more than 600 attendees reunite with nurses, physicians and staff. The event will take place from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 28, on the hospital campus in the Physician Office Center Parking Lot B.

One family that attends the reunion on a regular basis is the Krupkas from Sugar Grove. Michael and Tracy's son, Charlie, was born at 25 weeks and spent more than 100 days at the NICU. Charlie is now nine years old and a fourth grader.

"The nurses, physicians and staff became a part of our family. It's bond that never breaks," said Tracy Krupka. "They guided us through a difficult journey. With so many complications, they taught us how to change his tiny diapers and care for him. They kept us informed of Charlie's progress once I left the hospital. They'd call day or night to give us updates until Charlie was ready to come home. We are so happy with the care that we all received."

The reunion will feature games, music, food, clowns, magician and public safety vehicles from Downers Grove police and fire departments.
