Fire damages Palatine condo building

No injuries were reported Sunday after fire broke out in a storage room of an eight-unit condominium building in Palatine, officials said.

According to the Palatine Fire Department, firefighters called to 1905 N. Hicks Road at 5:06 p.m. arrived to find light smoke coming from the second floor of the two-story building. They investigated and found a fire in the outside storage room of a second-floor unit that had spread to the storage room of the unit below it.

Firefighters had to open walls and ceilings to expose the fire and were able to put it out by 5:24 p.m. with a water fire extinguisher, fire officials said. Firefighters continued to ventilate smoke and gases and perform salvage and overhaul activities for some time after that.

The fire caused minor damage to two condo units and left one uninhabitable. Damage estimates were not immediately available and the fire remains under investigation by Palatine investigators.

The fire was fought by 22 firefighters, staffing three engines, two ladder trucks, one rescue squad and three ambulances, officials said. A unit from the Arlington Heights Fire Department was among the first responders as part of an automatic aid agreement, and a unit from the Long Grove Fire Department stood by in a Palatine fire station to provide coverage for any additional calls. Palatine police officers assisted at the scene with traffic and crowd control.
