Car show raises funds for veterans with cancer

There will be a fundraiser next month along the Randall Road corridor in Algonquin for veterans suffering from cancer.

The Algonquin Commons mall, on the west side of Randall Road in Algonquin, is hosting a car show Sunday, Sept. 4, with all proceeds going to the Veterans Trust Grant Program, which helps veterans and their immediate family members with financial issues due to cancer diagnoses.

The car show will run from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the mall in the parking lot across from the new Art Van Furniture.

Any and all vehicles are welcome as long as they have wheels, organizer Rudy Kay said. It should be a good show, with a variety of vehicles for spectators to view, he added.

You may see an old Model T show up, or even military vehicles.

Registration for vehicles participating in the event will take place from 9:30 a.m. to noon. There is an entry fee of $15.

Vehicle judging begins at 12:30 p.m.

While all makes and models of vehicles are welcome, there will be themed memorial trophies awarded by decade. There also will be a best club participation award, a spectator's choice award and a best of show award given out that day. There also will be music, entertainment and more.

The stores in the mall also will be hosting sales that day. The restaurants in Algonquin Commons will be open their regular hours for anyone who would like to dine out as part of the event.

Last year, the Commons held a car show as part of its Touch-a-Truck event, mall representatives said. Mall officials said it was such a success and so big that they decided to give the car show its own date this year.

If it rains, it will be held Sept. 25. For information, call (224) 587-6803.

Back to School Blast:

While many kiddos up and down the Randall Road corridor already are in school for the year, it is never too late to celebrate the start of a successful year.

The Chick-fil-A along Randall Road in Batavia will be hosting a Back to School End of Summer Blast event this month. The fun will take place as part of the restaurant's weekly family night, which happens Tuesdays.

At the back to school event, there will be activities, celebrations and food, of course, as well as a celebration and encouragement for the school year ahead.

The event will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 30. For information, call (630) 761-2640. The restaurant is at 184 N. Randall Road.
