Social Security important to retirement plans

I read with great interest the article by David Barnes of Generation Opportunity regarding Social Security, which is yet another attempt by a right-wing organization to get rid of this highly successful program.

Social Security is not going broke and, yes, unless something is done, beginning in the year 2035 the program will pay 79 percent of the promised benefit and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future.

Social Security is not meant to live on, but to ensure that no one is ever left destitute, which is something that the 401K and IRA programs cannot guarantee.

Additional savings are part of a person's retirement plan, so to rely solely on these vehicles would be to remove the social safety net.

Social Security exists for the common good and the program can be made solvent forever by eliminating the cap on earnings.
