Building that housed a farmers market near Elkhart reopens

ELKHART, Ind. (AP) - A building that housed a large northern Indiana farmers market that closed six years ago amid the economic downturn is open for business again.

The Elkhart Truth reports (http://bit.ly/2bJuwK7) the American Countryside Farmers Market building is open and a grand opening celebration is planned for Labor Day. The building is a distinctive 51,000-square-foot red barn just south of Elkhart.

On the first floor, there are several restaurants, a bakery, an ice cream shop and an oxygen bar. While a few restaurants are open, others are awaiting approval from the health department. The second floor is dedicated to retail space. The main business purchases items from distribution centers for retailers and sells them for less.

The market opened in 2007 and closed in September 2010.
