Moenchengladbach and Schalke progress in German Cup

BERLIN (AP) - Borussia Moenchengladbach and Schalke both overcame lower-league opposition to progress from the first round of the German Cup on Saturday.

Julian Korb avoided embarrassment for 'Gladbach at fourth-tier side SV Drochtersen/Assel with the only goal in a 1-0 win, set up by Christoph Kramer in the 55th minute.

Schalke had no such trouble, winning 4-1 against sixth-tier Villingen.

Dennis Aogo got the visitors underway in the 10th, nine minutes before new signing Breel Embolo made it 2-0. Johannes Geis scored with a long-range strike, before Klaas Jan Huntelaar struck late.

But Mario Ketterer had the home fans celebrating a moral victory when he scored Villingen's consolation in the final minute.

Cologne routed sixth-tier BFC Preussen 7-0 in Berlin, with Japan striker Yuya Osako coming off the bench to score twice.

Wolfsburg edged past third-division FSV Frankfurt 2-1 in the late game, and promoted Bundesliga side Freiburg won 4-0 at fourth-tier SV Babelsberg.

Five games went to extra time Saturday afternoon, including the Saxon derby between second-division Dynamo Dresden and promoted Bundesliga side Leipzig.

That ended 2-2 after Stefan Kutschke scored twice to cancel Leipzig's 2-0 halftime lead, and Dresden goalkeeper Marvin Schwaebe saved a spot kick as the home side won 5-4 on penalties.

Klaus Gjasula clinched the winner in extra time for third-division Hallescher FC in a 4-3 victory over second-division Kaiserslautern, while Italian striker Elia Soriano headed Wuerzburger Kickers into the next round with a 1-0 extra-time win over second-division rival Eintracht Braunschweig.

Nuremberg goalkeeper Raphael Schaefer saved the last penalty to give the second-division side a 6-5 win on penalties at fourth-tier Viktoria Cologne.

Second-division Arminia Bielefeld also needed penalties to progress, beating fourth-tier Rot-Weiss Essen 5-4 after it finished 2-2 in normal time.

Karim Matmour scored in injury time for 1860 Munich to beat second-division rival Karlsruher SC 2-1, Fortuna Duesseldorf won 3-0 at third-division Hansa Rostock, and another second division side, Stuttgart, beat fourth-tier Homburg 3-0.

Defending champion Bayern Munich progressed Friday with a comfortable 5-0 win at fourth-tier Carl Zeiss Jena.
