Fire leaves Wheaton home uninhabitable

Combustible rags appear to have been the cause of a Thursday night fire that left a Wheaton house uninhabitable, authorities said.

Crews from the Wheaton Fire Department responded about 7 p.m. to the 200 block of North Pierce Avenue. When they arrived, they found the fire in the basement.

The blaze was brought under control within minutes, officials said. The resident of the house escaped safely and no one was injured.

Damage estimates were not immediately available.

Officials said the fire was accidental and appears related to rags containing a solvent used for applying stain that were improperly disposed of in the basement.

Wheaton police and several fire departments from neighboring towns assisted firefighters at the scene.
