Streamwood man sentenced to 19 years for scalding 5-year-old

A Streamwood man pleaded guilty Thursday to trapping a 5-year-old in a shower and spraying his body with scalding water while the desperate boy sought relief by covering his head with a toy bucket.

Brian Magsombol, 30, was sentenced to 19 years in prison in exchange for his guilty plea to the class X felony, which carries a maximum of 30 years in prison. Magsombol, who received credit for 368 days in custody, must complete at least 85 percent of his sentence before he is eligible for parole.

Prosecutors say Magsombol was watching the 5-year-old boy on Aug. 13, 2015, while the boy's mother was at work.

While preparing to take a shower before bed, the boy was unable to regulate the water temperature and asked Magsombol for help.

"This frustrated the defendant," who had been sleeping and watching TV, said Cook County Assistant State's Attorney Kristin Piper. She said Magsombol set the water temperature to the hottest setting, held the shower doors closed and began spraying the screaming child on the head, face and body "to teach the victim what hot water felt like."

The boy spent two weeks in a hospital burn unit, Piper said.

His parents, Samantha and Adrian Raygoza, say their son will carry on his body, arms and face physical reminders of the trauma that will never fade.

Magsombol did not speak during the hearing, but his mother and other relatives sobbed quietly throughout.

"I have a very hard time wrapping my mind around how anyone could inflict such harm on an innocent baby," said Judge Joel Greenblatt. "He looked to you for support, guidance and trust ... to say you betrayed that trust is a gross understatement."

Speaking after the hearing, Samantha Raygoza, 26, said Magsombol's sentence wasn't long enough.

"I don't think any amount of time is long enough," said Raygoza, who said she and Magsombol had dated in the past but were simply friends at the time her son was injured.

"I'm happy it's over and that he'll serve a long sentence," said Adrian Raygoza, 29.
