Anderson Animal Shelter plans North Aurora satellite

A previous version had an incorrect name for the shopping center. It is Randall Commons.

The Anderson Animal Shelter plans to open a second facility next to a pet-supplies store in North Aurora.

The space in the Randall Commons shopping center would house healthy dogs and cats that are 8 weeks or older, according to the application for a special-use permit.

The village board approved the permit Monday night.

According to the application, the space, next to the Pet Supplies Plus store, would have six enclosures for unspecified animals, four puppy pens, five kitten colonies, a kitten cage, a puppy cage, and four enclosures for cats. It also would have a spot featuring the "Dog of the Day."

It will house 15 to 20 dogs and puppies and 20 to 30 cats and kittens.

Any animals who become ill would be transferred to Anderson's South Elgin facility, which has a veterinary clinic.

Anderson was founded in 1966 as the Humane Society of North Central Illinois. It is a no-kill shelter, meaning it does not euthanize animals to make way for new ones.
