Bartlett Library patrons learn how to conserve with solar energy
On Thursday, August 4, Illinois Solar Energy Association Solar Ambassador Jeff Gahris gave an introduction to residential solar energy systems and explained the benefits of powering homes by using solar energy.
He began by listing a few myths people believe when it comes to solar energy, such as: It's too expensive, people don't get enough sun or it will be harder to sell the house. Once those were debunked, Gahris went on to explain different solar energy techniques. The two basic types are solar thermal and solar electricity.
Solar thermal heats water and living spaces, is a mature technology and can tolerate some shade. Solar electricity is an evolving technology, integrates into existing load center and can receive credit for excess power.
There are a few steps in order for a person to use more solar energy at home:
• Schedule site evaluations
• Choose a contractor
• Sign interconnection and any grant forms
• Permits will be completed by installer (30-60 days)
• Two weeks for delivery of materials after permit
• One to two weeks for installation of materials
In total, the process to go solar takes about three to four months.

An upcoming Adult Services program is "Alexander Hamilton: The American Rags to Riches Story" on Thursday, Aug. 25 at 7 p.m. Alexander Hamilton was born in the Caribbean and abandoned as a child. How did these humble beginnings plant the seeds of opportunity for this founding father? Ironically, he created opportunities for others by helping to create a government he could never run as President.
