Music notes: Raue Center welcomes Michael W. Smith

Christian rock in Crystal Lake

Even though he had been performing musically since 1981, Christian rock artist Michael W. Smith took mainstream audiences by surprise with his early '90s release “Go West Young Man,” which featured the No. 1 adult-contemporary hit “I Will Be Here for You” and the Billboard-charting “Place in This World.” Closely following in the footsteps of longtime collaborator Amy Grant, the Grammy-winning Smith was one of the trailblazers bringing fans of secular music into the same market as fans of more religious artists. Catch Smith when he plays Crystal Lake's Raue Arts Center this weekend. 8 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 20, at Raue Center for the Arts, 26 N. Williams St., Crystal Lake. $65-$75. (815) 356-9212 or rauecenter.ticketforce.com.

'Head Over Heels' for the last time

The chart-topping Go-Go's proved in the early '80s that an all-female band playing original music can be successful in the male-dominated record industry. Now their “Going Going Gone” farewell tour brings the women and their hits - including “We Got the Beat,” “Our Lips Are Sealed,” “Vacation” and many more - to Ravinia Festival Friday, Aug. 19. 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 19, at Ravinia Festival, 200 Ravinia Park Road, Highland Park. $38-$80. (847) 266-5100 or ravinia.org.

Country rock with Parmalee

Country rockers Parmalee are bringing their No. 1 smash hit “Carolina” and other chart-topping tunes to Joe's Live in Rosemont. The North Carolina band of brothers (and cousin and lifelong best friend) has made a splash on the country scene, most recently with the new single “Roots,” and they're heading to Rosemont with openers Morgan Evans and Southern rock newcomer Morgan Wallen. 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 19, at Joe's Live, 5441 Park Place, Rosemont. $20. (847) 261-0392 or joesliverosemont.com.
