Kane County warns computer vendors of scam

Kane County's purchasing department is warning potential vendors about a scam.

According to the county's newsletter, someone has been sending fake requests to businesses for price quotes on computer equipment.

In one case the request was for 25 laptop computers and 125 portable hard drives, at an estimated value of $56,250.

The Kane County sheriff's office is investigating. A spokesman declined to say whether any vendors actually supplied the information or filled any orders.

The phony forms bear the name of a former purchasing director, include an incorrect county phone number and email address, and specify delivery to two addresses in Elgin and Bolingbrook, which isn't in Kane County.

Purchasing Director Theresa Dobersztyn is asking vendors to notify the staff at purchasing@co.kane.il.us or call her at (630) 444-1071 if they receive a suspicious request for quotes for large computer purchases.
