GOP's subverting of voting rights shameful

As one who taught Civics in the 1970s, I was committed to emphasize the importance of voting. I believed all Americans needed to have a voice in their government, especially since that government has the power to take their money through taxation, their liberty through imprisonment, even their lives.

Since the Supreme Court's recent vote to gut the Voting Rights Act, Republican state houses across the country have done their best to deny voting rights to a segment of American citizens, the very old, minorities, students, in a cynical and undemocratic strategy to win elections.

I find these attempts to deny any American their constitutional right to vote to be both un-American and contrary to democratic ideals. How does one develop a pride in citizenship when their right to vote is being denied? I haven't seen any Republican leader come out to condemn this unpatriotic strategy.

Perhaps Republicans should be adopting policies to rebuild the disappearing middle class if they want to win elections, instead of trying to subvert the American democratic process.

Shameful.
