Connecting with cops

In a world in which we've seen so much friction between law enforcement and the populace, it was heart warming to see so many kids enjoying the company of cops all over the suburbs this week during observances of National Night Out.

Scaling the highest peaks ...

Next time you nix plans for an evening walk because you're too tired, think about 12-year-old Lucy Westlake of Naperville, who recently became the youngest girl to scale the highest peaks in each of the lower forty-eight states. Along with her dad, Rodney, Lucy is now gearing up to tackle the daunting Mount Denali in Alaska.

... with a hand from Mom and Dad

While climbing all those mountains and, sometimes hills, is quite an accomplishment, we hope Lucy remembers to thank her parents for taking her all over the country and exposing her to experiences many people will never get. So congrats, Lucy, on your many climbs. And congrats, Mom and Dad, for giving her the chance.

Recycling communication

Do you know what's recyclable when you put materials out or drop them in your building's bin? We've done articles over the years and found it's more complicated than you think. Example Pizza box, OK; greasy pizza box, maybe not. Recycling pickup is good, but companies could communicate better on what materials they'll take.

Good work, ladies

Cady Cemetery in Inverness suffered vandalism in the 1950s and 1960s, as shown by two looted tombstones people have found in their yards over the years. Recently, a group of women, the Clarinda Cady Questers, led by Jeanne Pavlica, has worked hard to restore the cemetery and get a wrought iron fence installed. Thanks for caring.

Roselle Road tollway bridge bike lane

As the new Roselle Road bridge over the Addams Tollway takes shape, we noticed the bicycle/pedestrian path being built on the west side. It'll be great when it can be used, especially with the Paul Douglas Forest Preserve Trail just to the north, and there's never been a great way to get to the south sides of Schaumburg and Hoffman Estates.

About festivals ...

To Steven Galat, Lake Villa Days is not just another festival. His heartfelt essay in Neighbor described the festival, organized by the Firefighters Association, as an opportunity to personally thank volunteers who battled a blaze in January that eventually destroyed his Lindenhurst home. The firefighters are his heroes. They're ours, too.

Game on

Kudos to the Schaumburg Park District for tying in village parks and nature areas to Pokestops along the trails for "Pokemon Go" players. It promotes physical fitness while creating educational and safe places to hunt down those popular critters. Good job.

So soon?

If you're looking for signs of fall, take a look at your local high school football field on Monday morning. Teams all over the state will officially start the season with the first practice as preparation begins for the season openers Aug. 26.

And the winner is ...

The winner of Suburban Chicago's Got Talent will be announced this afternoon at the Taste of Arlington Heights. Congrats in advance to the winner and all the acts, who showed once again how much talent is right here in the suburbs.
