Investigation shows no hazardous materials at Rosemont hotel

A reported hazmat situation at a Rosemont hotel Thursday afternoon turned out to be not so hazardous after all.

The situation began about 4:30 Thursday with a small fire in a room at the Hampton Inn on the 9400 block of West Higgins Road. Investigators discovered suspicious materials in the room after the fire was extinguished. They took two suspects into custody and evacuated the hotel. The fire department even hosed down some of the guests.

On Friday, police said they have not yet determined what the materials are, but Illinois State Police have ruled out anything of a hazardous nature. Guests and emergency response personnel were hosed down in accordance with standard decontamination procedures associated with every potential hazmat situation, police said.

The one hotel guest was taken to a hospital at the guest's request. There was no update on that guest's condition available Friday.

The two suspects involved were released without charges, pending further investigation.
