Morton Scholarship winners announced

Congratulations to Inga Augustaitis, Christopher Scheithauer and Justine Tran, the 2016 winners of the Dr. Joseph C. Morton Memorial College Scholarship. Each of the three winners received a check for $1,000 toward college tuition for the upcoming school year.

This marks the second year of the Morton College Scholarship, which was established in honor and memory of Dr. Joseph C. Morton, P.H.D., former tenured university professor of American History at Northeastern Illinois University and noted author and lecturer on early American History. Morton was a 38-year resident of Arlington Heights.

The scholarship was established for high school seniors attending an accredited college or university in the fall of 2016. Criteria used in the selection process included the academic rigor of high school career, extracurricular activities, community service/volunteerism, financial need and the college and career goals of the candidates.

Inga Augustaitis is a 2016 graduate of Elk Grove High School. Inga was a member of the National Honor Society and the Tri-M Music Honor Society, participated in student council for four years, and earned honor roll status for seven semesters. Inga plans to attend the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign this fall to major in music education. Her parents are Arunas and Sigita Augustaitis of Elk Grove Village.

Christopher Scheithauer is a 2016 graduate of Niles North High School in Skokie. Christopher also participated in numerous activities throughout his high school career including the Model United Nations, Science Olympiad, Academic Bowl, Midwest Young Artists Conservatory and the debate team. Christopher plans to attend Hillsdale College, in Hillsdale, Michigan, and pursue a career in music, physics and economics. Christopher's parents are David and Marie Scheithauer of Skokie.

Justine Tran is a 2016 graduate of Elk Grove High School. Justine was a member of the National Honor Society, an Illinois State Scholar, was an AP Scholar with distinction, and participated on the chess team, Japanese speech contest, Arts Unlimited for District 214, and both chamber and symphony orchestras. Justine plans to attend Loyola University in the fall to pursue a career in biology. Her parents are Thoi Nguyen and Mai Tran of Des Plaines.

The scholarship winners were honored in a ceremony July 25 at Southminster Presbyterian Church in Arlington Heights.
