Elgin Community College, University of Illinois Chicago ink transfer student admission deal

Elgin Community College students now can transfer to the University of Illinois at Chicago for specific majors through a guaranteed admission agreement.

The deal inked in June includes ECC students seeking admission into UIC undergraduate programs including architecture, design and the arts, business administration, engineering, liberal arts and sciences, and urban planning and public affairs. The agreement is in force for three years with annual renewal to allow for improvements to ease of transfer as curricula are updated.

"This is the kind of partnership that most legislators, college leaders and policymakers talk about when they are talking about transfer agreements," ECC President David Sam said. "This is going to guarantee our students not only admission, but also access and admission into their majors. We are so excited about this because it does exactly what a community college and a university partnership is supposed to do."

ECC is among the top 10 educational institutions in Illinois with students who transfer to UIC. In fall 2015, 44 ECC students transferred to the university.

But the formal agreement will help students avoid any problems and more easily navigate the transfer process, said Kevin Browne, UIC vice provost for academic and enrollment services.

"This agreement will bring certainty of admission for students and identify clear paths for transfer of credit," he said.

The tuition rate ECC students pay upon transferring to UIC will not increase under the university's Undergraduate Guaranteed Tuition Program, he added.

UIC's Transfer Assistance Center will serve as a resource for newly admitted ECC transfer students, who also will be able to visit UIC for academic and extracurricular events.
