Man charged in 7-hour standoff in Elgin released on bond

An Elgin man charged in a 7-hour standoff with police has been released from jail after posting a $600 bond Sunday, officials said.

Mace D. Davis, 57, of the 200 block of National Street, is scheduled to appear in court Wednesday. He faces a charge of aggravated assault of a victim older than 60 years, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and disorderly conduct, police said.

Officers were called to the 200 block of National Street at 5:08 p.m. Friday for a report of a person with a firearm who had threatened someone in his home, Elgin police said.

A woman said she and Davis had argued, and Davis had threatened to shoot her with what she believed was a rifle, police said.

She escaped and was not injured.

A tactical response team arrived in the area as officers tried to find Davis, police said.

"Mr. Davis made statements to officers via telephone that he was not going to be arrested, and that he was armed with several knives and that he would harm officers if they attempted to make contact with him," police said in a news release.

Davis also threatened to release "a vicious dog" on SWAT officers, police said.

Officers continued to try to negotiate with Davis, but he refused to cooperate, police said, and officers used less-lethal sponge rounds to incapacitate him before he was taken into custody about 12:17 a.m. Saturday - more than seven hours after police were called.

Davis was taken by ambulance to Presence St. Joseph Hospital in Elgin and later was released to police.
