Fire causes $50,000 damage to Glen Ellyn home

A fire apparently sparked by the careless use of smoking materials caused roughly $50,000 in damage Thursday to a Glen Ellyn home, authorities said Friday.

Lombard firefighters responded shortly before 2 a.m. to a report of a fire at a duplex on the 1100 block of Londonberry Lane. The property is in Glen Ellyn and within the Glenbard Fire Protection District boundaries, but serviced and protected by the Lombard Fire Department.

All residents were out of the home by the time firefighters arrived. The fire was contained to a second-floor bedroom and brought under control in less than 10 minutes. No injuries were reported.

Lt. Mark Sepe said a firewall prevented the blaze from traveling to the other home in the duplex. However, the rest of the home where the fire occurred sustained significant smoke and water damage that made it uninhabitable.

"They won't be moving in for a while," he said.

Lombard firefighters were assisted at the scene by crews from 10 other fire departments.

Details about what the smoking materials were and how they caused the fire are still under investigation.
