Sounders sign Alvaro Fernandez for second stint with club

SEATTLE (AP) - The Seattle Sounders have signed midfielder Alvaro Fernandez for a second stint with the club.

The Sounders announced the Uruguayan standout's signing Thursday. The 30-year-old previously spent parts of three seasons with Seattle from 2010-12, during which he appeared in 55 MLS matches and scored 13 goals for the Sounders.

Fernandez was traded to Chicago midway through the 2012 season. He returns to Seattle after spending the last four seasons playing for Gimnasia of the Argentine first division, where he scored five goals in 57 league appearances.

Fernandez has made 12 appearances for the Uruguayan national team, including four during the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. He is the second major signing by the Sounders this week after they signed Nicolas Lodeiro as a designated player on Wednesday.
