Glen Ellyn Backyard BBQ supports the homeless

At the Glen Ellyn Backyard BBQ, you can savor the flavor of summer beyond Labor Day while lending a hand to neighbors in need.

The Glen Ellyn Backyard BBQ, which raises money for Bridge Communities, returns for its eighth year from noon to 9 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10, in the Glenwood Avenue parking lot on Crescent Boulevard, between Main Street and Prospect Avenue in Glen Ellyn.

With 61 teams competing in Best Ribs, Best Chicken, Best Dish and Best Sauce categories, this is the largest amateur barbecue contest in Illinois. After tasting the barbecue, festgoers can vote for their favorite sauce while certified judges evaluate the barbecue creations.

In addition to barbecue, vendors will offer burgers, hot dogs and even crabcakes.

The music starts out with School of Rock, followed by Chicago area favorites including Neverly Brothers, Expo 76 and the Total Pro Horns, and Bill "The Buddha" Dickens.

Family activities include Piglet Playland with bounce houses, games and face painting for the kids, plus a dunk tank for everyone.

All proceeds from the Glen Ellyn Backyard BBQ go directly to assist the homeless families served by Bridge Communities. The mission of Bridge Communities is to transition homeless families to self-sufficiency by working with partners to provide mentoring, housing and supportive services.
