Ciccolunghi named as new president of French club Marseille

MARSEILLE, France (AP) - Giovanni Ciccolunghi has replaced Vincent Labrune as president of Marseille.

The French club on Tuesday announced the appointment of the 72-year-old Italian-Swiss businessman, a specialist in sports marketing who previously worked for Adidas and for Robert Louis-Dreyfus, the late husband of Marseille's current owner Margarita Louis-Dreyfus.

Labrune's popularity waned over the past two seasons as he clashed with former coaches Marcelo Bielsa and Michel, who both left the club. Marseille, the only French club to win the European Cup - in 1993 - finished 13th last season in Ligue 1.

Ciccolunghi's arrival is reportedly aimed at helping Marseille find a new buyer to make it competitive again. He will meet with the players in the coming days.
