'(Police) go toward problems, not away'

The events in recent weeks have provided a framework for reflection on the value of life and the services that the police provide in communities across the country.

While discussions will continue on measures that need to be taken to keep communities and the police officers who serve them safe, during these times we remain dedicated to our service.

The officers lost in Dallas and Baton Rouge serve as a grim reminder that each year officers across the country are killed in the line of duty, doing what was expected when they took the oath of office. We are part of a larger family and feel the impact of these events.

Today there is much more to the job than making arrests and enforcing traffic laws. We wear many hats in those responsibilities and are not always responding to the most stable circumstances. Situations can change in seconds, resulting in quick decisions. We go when requested and don't have the luxury of avoiding the difficult incidents. We go toward the problems, not away.

It is the profession we chose and we do what we do not asking for thanks, but to provide the service needed.

The community support during this time has been outstanding. The thanks sent to us have taken many forms. We have received kind words and handshakes, emails, phone calls, notes, cards, treats and pizzas to name a few. It is wonderful to know we are supported by our elected officials, staff and community members during this time.

We appreciate knowing that so many have taken the time to express their gratitude. For that we are thankful to all, for this support.
