Oprah's old Chicago offices being cleared for McDonald's

CHICAGO (AP) - Demolition of the former home of "The Oprah Winfrey Show" is underway on Chicago's West Side to make way for the new headquarters of McDonald's Corp.

Harpo ended production at the studio last year, after developer Sterling Bay bought the complex for $30.5 million in 2014.

The world's biggest hamburger chain announced last month it signed a lease to move its corporate headquarters in 2018 from Oak Brook to Chicago. The fast-food behemoth will bring about 2,000 employees from its custom-built headquarters in the suburb.

McDonald's was previously based in Chicago from 1955 to 1971.

The company says the move is a way for it to attract workers who want to live in cities. Other companies have announced moves from the suburbs to cities, including Kraft Heinz and General Electric.
