Incorporated in 1959, Riverwoods is a scenic village on the southern border of Lake County known for its lush woodland. In 2015, the village was named a Tree City USA by the Arbor Day Foundation for its effective urban forest management.

Riverwoods is home to 3,656 people according to 2013 estimates by the United States Census Bureau.

One of many outdoor activities available to the Riverwoods community is the Des Plaines River Trail. Following the course of the Des Plaines River, the multiuse trail passes beneath Deerfield Road in Riverwoods on its way through Lake and Cook counties. It is used by hikers, cyclists, horse riders and cross-country skiers.

Another of Riverwoods' notable features is the Edward L. Ryerson Conservation Area. The forest preserve spans across 561 acres and contains 6.5 miles of trails for hikers and cross-country skiers. The preserve also includes the Ned Ryerson Trail - a 2.5-mile course that is wheelchair accessible and features audio interpretation for the visually impaired.

Most of Riverwoods lies within Deerfield Elementary District 109 and Township High School District 113. The village is also home to Riverwoods Montessori School, which is a nonsectarian elementary school and preschool serving children 2 to 12 years old.
