Two charged in Aurora shooting

Two Aurora men are facing attempted murder charges in connection with a Thursday afternoon shooting on the city's near east side.

Aaron Tolamac, 21, of the 600 block of South River Street, and Jesus Ferrel, 18, of the 1600 block of Marikay Avenue both have been charged with single counts of attempted murder and aggravated discharge of a firearm. Tolamac also faces a charge of unlawful use of a weapon by a felon and unlawful possession of marijuana.

The shooting happened about 2:20 p.m. Thursday on the 200 block of North Fourth Street.

Aurora police gave this account in a news release:

Tolamac and Ferrel approached an 18-year-old man they know, and Tolamac pulled out a handgun and fired several shots, all of which missed the man.

The two then ran to a black Chevrolet Malibu parked nearby and fled in the vehicle, which was driven by an 18-year-old Aurora woman.

After quickly learning the identities of Tolamac and Ferrel, police spotted the Chevy Malibu and followed it to the 1600 block of Liberty Street.

At that point, Tolamac was seen running from the car. The car then went east on Liberty to northbound Crane Street. Officers located Tolamac on the 300 block of Oakview and took him into custody without incident. Within minutes, the car was stopped on the 2000 block of East New York, and Ferrel and the woman were arrested.

Police said the investigation is continuing. But they said the shooting apparently stems from an ongoing dispute between Tolamac, Ferrel and the victim.

The woman was released without charges, officials said. The weapon used in the shooting is yet to recovered.

Police said Tolamac was in possession of a small amount of marijuana when he was arrested.

Tolamac also was wanted by Aurora police for aggravated discharge of a firearm in connection with a May 3, 2016, shooting. During that incident, a single gunshot was fired through the ceiling of a residence on the 2000 block of West Illinois Avenue, police said. No one was hurt.

In addition, Tolamac had outstanding warrants for misdemeanor battery and traffic charges, officials said.
