Suburbs clean up after powerful storm Thursday

Suburbs are cleaning up while ComEd continues to assist people who lost power after a line of heavy storms swept through the area Thursday evening.

The line of storms carrying 60 mph winds and heavy rain moved through the northwest suburbs at about 7 p.m. Thursday, said Kevin Donofrio of the National Weather Service.

Donofrio said nearly two inches of rain fell in Rockford due to the thunderstorm that hit McHenry County at 7 p.m. and traveled across the suburbs at about 40 mph.

The storm carried wind gusts of 60 mph, strong enough to crack tree limbs in Elgin, and uprooting a tree in Richmond.

Eastbound Summit Street remains closed in Elgin between Shales Parkway and Berner Drive due to a large tree in the road, authorities said.

ComEd is reportingthat scattered power outages remain from in the suburbs. Geneva, Schaumburg, Lake in the Hills and Fox Lake are all experiencing power outages this morning.

North Aurora recorded rainfall totals of 1.78 inches, Donofrio said. He said Lake in the Hills and Algonquin recorded about an inch. Lake County recorded slightly less than 1-inch. He said the storm dumped an inch of rain in 20 minutes in Rockford.

Donofrio said temperatures are expected to climb to 90 degrees again today, and the potential of an isolated thunderstorm exists in the afternoon.
