5 young men charged in Batavia mailbox-tipping spree

Five young men have been charged with criminal damage to property after a mailbox-tipping spree early Sunday morning on the east side of Batavia.

And because they ran away from police when ordered to stop, they are also being charged with resisting a peace officer, according to police.

The five are charged in connection with damage to five mailboxes in the 600 and 800 blocks of Norcross Drive.

Someone called police around 1:58 a.m. Sunday after seeing the five near a damaged mailbox.

"Several (police) cars saturated the area, and they (the suspects) were seen running through backyards," Detective Kevin Bretz said. An officer ran after them, "Yelling to 'Stop! Police!' ... They continued to run."

Police caught one, and the others gave up, Bretz said.

Those arrested are:

• Tomas J. Yurisich, 18, of the 900 block of Knox Lane, Batavia.

• Michael T. Fossali, 18, of the 0S600 block of Ellithorp Lane, Geneva.

• Tyler N. Tamplin, 18, of the 800 block of Boyd Court, Batavia.

• Colin N. Thurston, 18, of the 1100 block of Edwards Drive, Batavia.

• Andrew Costigan, 18, of the 700 block of Nordic Court, Batavia.

All are due to appear in Kane County Circuit Court Aug. 16.
