Borden Library offers Food for Fines

Library customers will be able to pay off overdue fines and help those in need at the same time during Gail Borden Library's Food for Fines campaign July 25-29.

Those who bring in canned goods to the main library, 270 N. Grove Ave., Elgin, will get $1 waived in overdue fines for every item brought in. Donations will benefit local food pantries.

There will be no limit on the number of items accepted although items must be nonperishable. Candy, bottled water, items in class jars, opened or outdated items, or dented cans will not be accepted. Replacement charges for lost material will not be included.

In addition, from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, July 24, stop by the grand opening of the new library branch in South Elgin, 127 S. McLean Blvd. After the ribbon-cutting ceremony, the celebration will include live musical entertainment, a performance by the award-winning Gail Borden Book Cart Drill team, ice cream, and tours of the new branch.

The new branch will offer popular books and movies, a program room, a laptop dispensing station and children's area. It will be open 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday to Thursday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday.

The library also offers "Fun Family Summer Events" with the "The Incredibles" interactive movie from 10 a.m. to noon Wednesday, July 27, in the Meadows Community Rooms at the main branch.

Relive the adventures of Mr. Incredible, Elastigirl and the rest of the Parr Family with props. All attendees will receive a prop bag with supplies to interact with the movie. Costumes are encouraged. Register at www.gailborden.info.

At 6 p.m. Wednesday, July 27, bring a picnic lunch to the library's west lawn, where beverages and dessert will be provided by the library. At 7 p.m., sing, dance and play with musician Tricia Sebastian. This show will be presented in English and Spanish.

In case of inclement weather, tickets for the performance will be handed out on a first-come, first-served basis starting at 6 p.m. in the lobby.
