School supplies needed for Hanover Township program

Hanover Township is gearing up for its annual Backpack Distribution and is once again asking the community for donations of school supplies and backpacks for township youth returning to school in the fall.

This year's event is being co-sponsored by State Representative Fred Crespo and Cook County Commissioner Timothy O. Schneider.

Most needed items include: backpacks, notebooks, loose leaf paper, pencils, markers, crayons, scissors, flash drives, blue pens and glue sticks. Donations of gift cards to use for the purchasing of school supply items are appreciated as well as any donation of supplies.

Last year, 1,280 backpacks filled with school supplies were given to township youth.

"The path to success in the classroom starts with having the resources and tools to succeed," said Brian P. McGuire, Hanover Township supervisor. "The township is proud to work with our sponsors and other community organizations to ensure our kids have what they need on day one of the school year."

Supplies can be dropped off at the following township locations: Town Hall, 250 S. Route 59 in Bartlett; Hanover Township Senior Center, 240 S. Route 59 in Bartlett; Hanover Township Astor Avenue Community Center, 7431 Astor Ave., in Hanover Park; and Hanover Township Izaak Walton Center, 899 Jay St., in Elgin.

This year's Backpack Distribution is set for Wednesday, Aug. 10, at the Hanover Township Astor Avenue Community Center, 7431 Astor Ave., Hanover Park. Beginning at 9 a.m. and going while supplies last, township youth can receive a free backpack filled with school supplies. Proof of residency is required, with a one backpack per child limit.

For information regarding a donation, contact the Astor Avenue Community Center at (630) 540-9085.
