At the Golden Oaks Equestrian Center in Wauconda yesterday, Shawn Minor clung to his saddle bronc while it pounced, kicked and did whatever else it could to throw him off. Just minutes before, Minor had been sitting by his trailer behind the bleachers, putting rosin on his saddle and pulling on his chaps. Minor, participating in the Wauconda Area Chamber of Commerce's 53rd annual IPRA Championship Rodeo, summed up the hardest part of riding in one word - "everything." Full story.

Lightning strike probable cause of Vernon Hills fire

A fire on the roof of a Vernon Hills house yesterday morning was likely caused by a lightning strike, fire officials said. About 9 a.m., shortly after a thunderstorm passed, a passer-by noticed the fire on the roof, called 911 and alerted the residents of the home, according to a news release from the Countryside Fire Protection District. Naperville apartment complex uninhabitable after fire

Residents of a Naperville apartment complex were displaced yesterday afternoon after a fire left the building uninhabitable, Naperville fire officials said. Two apartments and a gas line were damaged by the fire, and utilities were shut down throughout the entire building, causing residents of all 20 units to be relocated. Full story.

Runners trot through Aurora mall to help feed needy kids

Hundreds showed up early yesterday morning at the Chicago Premium Outlets in Aurora, but they weren't there for a big sale or waiting for the release of the latest high-tech gadget. Instead, they were there to get in their daily exercise and help those in need while they were at it, during the seventh annual 2nd 2 None 5K. Full story.

Alpine Fest parade in Lake Zurich lives up to billing

What's billed as Lake County's biggest parade stepped off yesterday as part of the 74th Alpine Fest celebration in Lake Zurich. The parade featured more than 50 entrants, including local businesses, community organizations, various bands, the volunteer fire department pumper fire truck, and Medinah Shriner magic carpets. Top 15 SCGT acts show range in Schaumburg

West Chicago resident Alex Guzman belted out the Tracy Chapman lyric "Gimme one reason to stay here" as a Top 15 finalist for Suburban Chicago's Got Talent.
