73-year-old man dies after falling into Lake Barrington

The 73-year-old man who fell from a small boat Friday into Lake Barrington has died, Lake County Sheriff's officials said Monday.

Boyd Jajesnica, of Lake Barrington, was pronounced dead Saturday at Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital, where he had been taken after rescue crews pulled him from the water Friday morning.

Deputies responded to the lake about 10:28 a.m. Friday on a report of someone struggling in the water, according to the sheriff's office.

A preliminary investigation indicated Jajesnica lost his balance while in the boat, and fell into the water. He was not wearing a flotation device, and was unable to stay above water, sheriff's police said.

A 65-year-old man who was in the boat with Jajesnica threw a flotation device to him, but the attempt failed. He also attempted to hold Jajesnica's head above water from the boat, said sheriff's Det. Chris Covelli, a spokesman for the Lake County sheriff's office.

Jajesnica remained underwater for about 10 minutes until rescuers from the Wauconda Fire District were able to remove him from the lake, authorities said.
