'The Wiz' comes to Des Plaines stage

ArtReach Educational Theatre in partnership with Spotlite Theatrix Production Company is staging "The Wiz," music and lyrics by Charlie Smalls; book by William F. Brown.

Shows will be performed at the Leela Arts Center, 620 Lee St., in Des Plaines. Performances will be 7:30 p.m. on Friday, July 29, 3 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, July 30 and 3 p.m. Sunday, July 31. A beloved Broadway gem, "The Wiz" infuses L. Frank Baum's "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" with a dazzling mix of rock, gospel and soul music. This timeless tale of Dorothy's adventures through the land of Oz is a fun, family-friendly, modern musical.

The show is directed by Dan Walsh (Des Plaines), with choreography by Dan Walsh, Jonah Parra (Des Plaines) and Anne Santiago (Los Angeles), and musical direction by Jessica Harrigan Texidor.

The cast includes, Madalyn Griseto (Des Plaines) as Dorothy; Jonah Parra (Des Plaines) as Scarecrow; Kevin Foss (Palatine) as the Tinman; Tony Uzzle (Algonquin) as the Lion; Trisha Tucker (Schaumburg) as Evilene' Mia Melone (Palatine) as Addaperle; Tanya Williams (Palatine) as Aunt Em/Glinda; and Vinny Prisco (St. Charles) as The Wiz.

The mission of ArtReach Educational Theatre is to expose children to all aspects of theater, music and dance. The program is open to children, ages 5 through high school, from beginner to advanced performing levels, who have a genuine interest in the arts. All children are challenged and encouraged. Private voice lessons, dance and acting classes, advanced musical theater workshops and summer Arts Camp programs are offered in Palatine.
