Man charged in Streamwood wedding reception brawl

A 42-year-old California man was charged with misdemeanor battery after police say he repeatedly struck another man early Saturday during a brawl at wedding reception in Streamwood.

Vinh Quan Vi, of Westminster, California, was arrested at 1:43 a.m. Saturday, after officers were called to a banquet hall on the 700 block of South Barrington Road.

According to a police report, the responding officer arrived to find Vi and several other men getting into a vehicle outside the banquet hall. The report stated they appeared intoxicated based on their “slurred speech, unsteady movements, and belligerent demeanor.”

Vi was detained after he and a second man were identified by a security guard as having been involved in the fighting, police said.

Other people involved had already left by the time police arrived, a witness told officers.

Police then went inside the hall and found a 34-year-old Elgin man who had blood on his head and shirt, a cut on his head and bruising and swelling around his forehead and eyes. The man told police several people jumped him in front of the building, and Vi had punched him in the head several times, the report said.

The victim was taken to St. Alexius Medical Center in Hoffman Estates.

Other witnesses told officers that Vi earlier had been walking through the reception hall throwing chairs and appearing agitated as he searched for his jacket. At one point, witnesses said, he picked up a computer belonging to the DJ hired for the wedding and threw it to the ground, according to the police report.

Vi faces up to a year in jail if he's convicted. He posted bond and is scheduled to appear in court July 28.
