Hip-hop author Nate Marshall coming to Oakton July 13

Award-winning poet, rapper, educator and activist Nate Marshall will bring his unique form of hip-hop poetry to engage audiences at 6 p.m., Wednesday, July 13, at Oakton's Footlik Theater, 1600 E. Golf Road, Des Plaines. The free event is part of the college's Chicago Writers Series.

Co-editor of "The BreakBeat Poets: New American Poetry in the Age of Hip-Hop" (Haymarket Books) and author of the award-winning book "Wild Hundreds," Marshall sparks conversations exploring identity, class, political engagement, and personal narrative.

Marshall also starred in the award winning full-length documentary "Louder Than a Bomb" and has been featured on the HBO original series "Brave New Voices." He and his group, Daily Lyrical Product, released the rap album "Grown" in 2015. Marshall's poetry has appeared in "Poetry Magazine," "Indiana Review," and "The New Republic."

A reception and book signing will follow the performance.
