Mitchell Museum Native Garden Tour July 17

Join the Mitchell Museum of the American Indian on Sunday, July 17 from 1:00-2:00 pm for a tour of the Mitchell Museum's garden and green spaces. Eli S. Suzukovich III (Little Shell Chippewa/Cree) will introduce visitors to the various trees and plants that call the museum home. The tour is free with regular admission.

The tour will cover northern yucca, yarrow, and milkweed with a special focus on the juniper and downy hawthorn trees. These common garden and ornamental trees found in Evanston and the surrounding area are used as food, medicines, lumber, and for spiritual significance for many tribes throughout North America.

Suzukovich, is a member of the National Urban Forestry Advisory Council, a Fellow at the Keller Science Action Center of the Field Museum in Chicago, and the former urban ecology coordinator for the American Indian Center of Chicago. He holds a doctorate in anthropology from the University of Montana in Missoula, where his studies focused on cultural resource management. He is currently on faculty at Northwestern University and the visitor services and education coordinator for the Mitchell Museum of the American Indian.

The Mitchell Museum is one of only a handful of museums in the country that focuses exclusively on the art, history and culture of American Indian and First Nation peoples throughout the United States and Canada. In 2012, the Mitchell Museum was named "Best Museum of The North Shore: Up and Comer" by Make it Better magazine, won the Superior award by the Illinois Association of Museums and was named a national finalist by the American Association of State and Local History award program. The Chicago Tribune named the Mitchell Museum one of its top 10 museums for 2015.

It is open Tuesday-Wednesday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Thursday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday- Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday noon to 4 p.m. Admission is $5 for adults, $3 for seniors, students and children and free for Mitchell Museum members and Tribal members.
