Evansville man gets 9ˆ½ years car crash fraud scheme

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (AP) - An Evansville man has been sentenced to more than 9ˆ½ years in prison for paying people to stage car crashes to defraud insurance companies.

U.S. District Judge Richard L. Young sentenced 57-year-old Michael W. Burris Sr. to 115 months for conspiracy to commit wire fraud and mail fraud.

Prosecutors say that over a six-year period from 2008 to 2014, Burris and relatives recruited people to help stage car crashes, file false police reports and submit false insurance claims for faked or self-inflicted injuries.

The Evansville Courier & Press reports (http://bit.ly/295SQ6x ) Burris' attorney, James McKinley, told Young his client was motivated partly to help people when they came to him with their troubles.

Burris was among 36 people indicted after a two-year investigation by federal authorities.
