Attorney says man charged in CTA stabbing has schizophrenia

CHICAGO (AP) - A man accused of stabbing a woman to death on a Chicago L train suffers from paranoid schizophrenia.

During a Wednesday hearing, public defender Julie Koehler said 29-year-old Arthur Jones has been institutionalized at least 10 times since he was diagnosed with the illness in high school.

Jones is charged in the stabbing death of 25-year-old Jessica Hampton as they rode a Chicago Transit Authority train on June 23.

Cook County Assistant State's Attorney April Gonzales said the pair were arguing when Jones asked Hampton if she was going to have his baby. When she said no, Jones stabbed her in the neck and upper body and sliced her throat. He was arrested after witnesses called police.

Gonzales said the attack was captured by surveillance cameras.

Judge Adam Bourgeois Jr. ordered Jones held without bail.
