Editorial: Enough! Time for leaders, lawmakers to produce a budget

Today the Daily Herald joins with newspapers around the state that are entreating the lawmakers and leaders of Illinois with a simple demand: Enough. In this editorial, the Daily Herald Editorial Board says the "stopgap" budget intended to maintain some basic services and possibly even let schools open on time should be the minimum citizens expect. "To them, we say it is not enough to try. This is the barest of bare minimums that must be accomplished." Full editorial.

Suburban lawmakers say something's got to give with budget battle

Democratic state Sen. Melinda Bush and Republican Rep. David McSweeney are part of what Bush describes as a "small but growing voice" calling on Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner, Democratic House Speaker Michael Madigan and state Sen. President John Cullerton to put aside politics in their protracted budget battle. DUI arrests spike in Carol Stream, Elgin

Carol Stream police tied with Rockford in nabbing the state's highest tally of impaired drivers among Illinois municipal departments outside Chicago, the Alliance Against Intoxicated Motorists reported Tuesday. Impaired driving arrests by Carol Stream police totaled 464 last year, a 32 percent increase compared to 352 in 2014. Full story.

No one injured in Gurnee fire

A fire was contained to a bedroom of a two-story house Tuesday night in Gurnee, authorities said. Crews were dispatched to the fire on the 300 block of Churchill Lane at 7 p.m., according to the Gurnee Fire Department. Full story.

Community voices anger at release of Fenton soccer coach

A group of students, parents and community members is expressing outrage at the unexpected dismissal of a longtime boys soccer head coach at Fenton High School. David Alvarez said he didn't know why he was being fired from his coaching position and his job as an IT coordinator for the Bensenville school after 10 years. Full story.

Leona's coming to Elk Grove

Leona's Italian restaurant is set to open in Elk Grove Village in August, one of five new restaurants this year. Two more are scheduled to open in Chicago, as well as additional suburban locations in Glenview and Evanston. Full story.

Bartlett firefighters say leave fireworks to the pros

As the Fourth of July approaches, officials are encouraging residents to leave the fireworks, including sparklers, to the professionals. The Bartlett Fire Protection District on Tuesday hosted a demonstration at the district's headquarters on North Oak Avenue, showing how a spark from a sparkler can burn through a T-shirt, causing third-degree burns in less than a minute.
